Internal labels occlude parts of the visualization and have a negative effect on the spatial comprehension. In contrast 3D internal labels can give additional shape cues (VMV07).
In combination with other illustrative rendering techniques 3D labels can be used to mimic the style of anatomical atlases (VMV07).
Our VMV07 paper on multimodal visualization describes how to visualize multimodal data sets by using glyphs.
Application of a 3D region of interest (ROI) in Voreen. Different visual representations can be used inside and outside the ROI. The underlying technique is described in our VMV05 paper.
Voreen makes it easy to apply illustrative rendering techniques such as toon shading and contour highlighting.
Also the combination of other rendering techniques can be achieved easily. The Figure shows a focus and context visualization by combining Phong shading with toon shading as well as edge enhancement and silhouette highlighting.
